# A LOVE FOR OTHERS
## 1 Corinthians 13:1-13
**Lucky Lemons | Bowdon Baptist Church | Sunday, August 30, 2026**
**Built to a 26-minute core.**

## THE POINT
**We are to love others as God loves us.**

## THE BOARD SENTENCE
**Love is not the wrapping on the gifts. Love is what is left when the gifts are gone.**

## THE RECURRING LINE
**Love is the last thing standing.**

Four uses: opening plant, verse 8 harvest, verse 13 turn outward, close.

## FIXED OPENING PROMISE
Every Sunday in Lucky Lemons, we’re trying to do three things: learn something new about Scripture, love Jesus and people just a little more, and figure out how to live it when Monday morning gets here.

**Learn. Love. Live.**

## TIMING GRID
| Beat | Built | Planned start |
|---|---:|---:|
| Promise + opening + The Bible Meets Life | 3:45 | 10:15 |
| Section 1, 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 | 4:30 | 10:18:45 |
| Section 2, 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 | 7:00 | 10:23:15 |
| Section 3, 1 Corinthians 13:8-13 | 6:30 | 10:30:15 |
| Landing, obedience, prayer | 4:15 | 10:36:45 |
| **Core total** | **26:00** | **finish 10:41** |

The teacher deck records the real start at LL-PROMISE-01, the real finish when PRAY advances to Capture, every card segment, and actual time by section. Nothing about that instrumentation appears during teaching except the existing checkpoint facts.

## CLASS FLOW

### OPEN
Suppose loving somebody could make you sick. Not inconvenience you. Not cost you twenty dollars. Make you sick. Maybe kill you. Would you stay?

The Bible Meets Life remains a book-only class ritual. It is intentionally not duplicated in the student deck. After the class reads it, the only harvest sentence is: **They did not just have a different definition of love. They stayed in the room.**

### SECTION 1: 1 CORINTHIANS 13:1-3
Paul is still inside the spiritual-gifts argument of chapters 12-14. Chapter 13 is not a wedding intermission. Three equations: speech without love becomes noise; knowledge and faith without love leave me nothing; sacrifice without love gains me nothing.

**TEXT:** verse 1 uses the phrase “sounding bronze.”

Sticky line: **Without love, it doesn’t count.**

**MONDAY TEST 1:** What good thing can I do so efficiently, correctly, or impressively that I forget there is a person on the receiving end?

### SECTION 2: 1 CORINTHIANS 13:4-7
Paul gives love work clothes. One anonymous live poll asks which part of verses 4-7 is hardest to live on an ordinary Monday. This is the only poll in the room.

Then the true teacher-only story: a trusted attorney and good boss in federal work used a government credit card for personal tires and casino cash advances. The record followed him for years and eventually cost him his job. Keep him unnamed and do not add identifying detail.

Verse 5 uses **logizetai**, an accounting verb: reckon, calculate, keep account. Love does not keep the ledger open. This does not erase truth or consequences; verse 6 says love rejoices with the truth.

**MONDAY TEST 2:** Whose ledger am I still keeping? Monday, do not add yesterday’s charge to today’s bill.

### SECTION 3: 1 CORINTHIANS 13:8-13
Verse 8 harvests the recurring line: **Love is the last thing standing.** The gifts Corinth prized are temporary, not worthless but not ultimate.

**DIG DEEPER: BRONZE + MIRROR**
- **TEXT:** verse 1 explicitly uses bronze. Verse 12 explicitly uses a mirror.
- **HISTORY:** Greek box mirrors could be cast-bronze disks polished to reflect.
- **ARCHAEOLOGY:** the British Museum catalogs a bronze mirror, c. 380-370 BC, made in Corinth and said to be from Corinth.
- **SPECULATION:** Paul deliberately chose the two images because of Corinth’s bronze industry. Possible, interesting, not provable. Say that limit out loud.

Payoff: **At the beginning, bronze makes noise. Near the end, bronze can give you a reflection. Neither one lasts. Love does.**

**MONDAY TEST 3:** Who am I waiting to fully understand before I decide to love well? I may only have part of the picture Monday. Love them with the light I have.

### LANDING
Christianity does not begin with God handing us the list and saying “Do better.” Before He told us to love this way, He loved us this way. Jesus came near, served, told the truth, bore what was ours, and went to the cross.

Callback to the third-century Christians: they stayed in rooms others ran out of because costly love had already come near to them in Christ.

Eyes closed. One person. One verb. Phones stay down from QUIET forward.

Final spoken words before prayer: **Love is the last thing standing. Learn. Love. Live.**
