# LUCKY LEMONS ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL
## God Speaks Through Circumstances
### Romans 8:26-35
**FROZEN v1.1 - SOURCE OF TRUTH**
Bowdon Baptist Church | Sunday, September 27, 2026

**LifeWay In Focus:** God uses circumstances to guide us in His will.

**Passage-first guardrail:** Romans 8:26-35 more directly teaches how believers should understand life inside weakness, suffering, uncertainty, accusation, and hardship. It does not teach that every event is a coded message from God. LifeWay itself adds the same guardrail: circumstances on their own are not always indicators of God's plan.

**SCRIPTURE TEXT STATUS:** Reader cards use **ESV**, matching Lucky Lemons architecture. Romans 8:26-35 was supplied directly by Bobby and verified before freeze. Spoken copy is aligned to the reader wording.

---

# VERSION HISTORY

- **v1.1 FROZEN:** Resolves the ONE ACT source ambiguity found in independent cross-surface audit. The single canonical ONE ACT is **Run one circumstance through the Correct Lens this week.** The duplicate ONE ACT tag on Card 17 is removed; Card 17 spoken copy and the Learn. Love. Live. close now use the same canonical action; AAR tag-derived prompts are aligned to exact source wording. This is a manuscript correction, not a downstream deck patch.
- **v1.0 FROZEN:** Inserts Bobby-supplied and verified ESV text for Romans 8:26-35; aligns spoken wording to ESV in verses 33-35; corrects the section 2 verse-35 list to **tribulation**; quotes Paul's questions exactly in TEACH 3; keeps Erastus out of the core; preserves the intentional callback, **Last week: the Spirit reveals. This week: the Spirit intercedes**; retains the two-intercessors discovery as the week's primary Dig Deeper insight; keeps the poll anonymous and removes the public show-of-hands fallback.
- **v0.2 CANDIDATE:** Locked ESV architecture, demoted Erastus, added the September 20 Spirit callback, revised the poll, and aligned most spoken wording to ESV.
- **v0.1 CANDIDATE:** First passage-first build from the photographed LifeWay lesson and the Lucky Lemons/Bobby Gaines Teaching System.

**Freeze rule:** This file is now the only authoring surface for the September 27 lesson. Teacher deck, student deck, AAR candidate lists, weekly cards, captions, and any later teaching surface must serialize from this version. Any spoken-content change requires a new manuscript version before downstream rebuilds.

# 1. THE ONE THING

## BIG IDEA
[MAIN POINT]

**Circumstances are not a code to crack. They are a place where God is already at work.**

## STICKY LINE
[STICKY LINE]

**Read your circumstances through God's character, not God's character through your circumstances.**

## ONE ACT
[ONE ACT]

**Run one circumstance through the Correct Lens this week.**

Write two lines:

1. **What this circumstance makes me fear or assume**
2. **What Romans 8 says is already true**

Then pray from the second line before you make the circumstance mean anything else.

---

# 2. HONESTY / CLAIM LABELS

- **TEXT:** Romans 8:26-27 says the Spirit helps believers in weakness and intercedes according to God's will.
- **TEXT:** Romans 8:28 says all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose.
- **TEXT:** Romans 8:29 immediately defines the direction of that good as being conformed to the image of God's Son.
- **TEXT:** Romans 8:34 says Christ is at God's right hand and intercedes for believers.
- **TEXT:** Romans 8:35 asks whether tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, or sword can separate believers from the love of Christ.
- **PROBABLE / HISTORICAL:** Paul probably wrote Romans from Corinth around AD 56-57. This is the position stated in the LifeWay commentary supplied for this lesson. Use it only as a warm continuity bridge from last Sunday, not as the week's scholarship centerpiece.
- **TEXTUAL / LITERARY DISCOVERY:** Romans 8:26 says the Spirit intercedes for believers; Romans 8:34 says Christ intercedes for believers. This is the week's primary Dig Deeper discovery because it clarifies the paragraph itself.
- **TEXTUAL / LINGUISTIC LIMIT:** Romans 8:28 has a known textual and grammatical question about whether the line should be rendered "all things work together" or more explicitly "God works all things." Either way, the surrounding paragraph places God's purpose at the center. Do not make the technical issue the sermon.
- **ESV WORDING LOCK:** Verse 35 uses **tribulation**, not affliction. Verse 33 asks who shall bring any **charge** against God's elect. Verse 34 asks, **Who is to condemn?** Spoken copy follows those words.

# 3. REPEAT-PASSAGE COLLISION CHECK

Library search completed before freeze.

**Result:** no earlier Lucky Lemons lesson centered on Romans 8:26-35 surfaced in the archive search.

Do not assume that means no verse from Romans 8 has ever been quoted as a supporting text. This check only clears the planned-passage collision at the lesson level.

# 5. FULL TEACHING MANUSCRIPT

## CARD 1 - COVER
**God Speaks Through Circumstances**
Romans 8:26-35
Sunday, September 27, 2026

[MAIN POINT]

**Circumstances are not a code to crack. They are a place where God is already at work.**

Teacher cue: Cover stays quiet. Timing cockpit remains READY.

---

## CARD 2 - OPEN
### Last week we were in Corinth. We may still be there.

Teacher:

"Last Sunday we were walking around Corinth with Paul.

Here is something I love about the way the Bible fits together.

The letter we are opening this morning, Romans, was probably written from Corinth a few years after Paul first arrived there.

So we turned the page from Corinthians to Romans, but Paul may not have changed cities.

Last week Paul showed us the Spirit revealing what we could not discover on our own.

This week he gives us a different picture of the Spirit.

When we do not even know what to pray, the Spirit intercedes."

[CALLBACK - intentional continuity, not repeated teaching]

**Last week: the Spirit reveals. This week: the Spirit intercedes.**

Teacher:

"But here is what matters this morning. Paul is writing to Christians in Rome about how to live when life does not make sense."

[MAIN POINT]

**You do not need to understand the circumstance before God can work in it.**

---

## CARD 3 - IN FOCUS
LifeWay:

**God uses circumstances to guide us in His will.**

Teacher:

"LifeWay gives us an important balance on the very first page.

God can use circumstances.

But circumstances by themselves are not always indicators of God's plan.

That saves us from two mistakes.

One mistake says, 'Nothing means anything.'

The other says, 'Everything that happens is God sending me a private code.'

Romans 8 gives us a better lens."

[MAIN POINT]

**A circumstance can be part of God's guidance without becoming your Bible.**

"So what does that change on Monday morning?"

---

## CARD 4 - READ
### Romans 8:26-27 - ESV

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Teacher cue: Let the reader finish before teaching.

---

## CARD 5 - TEACH 1
### When you do not know what to pray

Teacher:

"Paul does not begin with somebody who has life figured out.

He begins with weakness.

And then he says something almost embarrassingly honest.

Sometimes we do not even know what to pray for.

Not how to word it.

Not what outcome to ask for.

Not whether the thing we want would actually be good for us."

[MAIN POINT]

**Not knowing what to pray is not prayer failure.**

Pause.

"The Spirit helps us in our weakness.

Paul does not say the Spirit stands across the room waiting for us to get our act together.

He helps.

He intercedes.

And verse 27 says He does it according to the will of God."

[MAIN POINT]

**When you run out of words, the Spirit does not run out of help.**

Teacher development note:
The commentary allows "weakness" to be heard broadly, but it especially fits the immediate problem of inadequacy in prayer. Do not pretend the word only means one narrow thing.

"So what does that change on Monday morning?"

---

## CARD 6 - MONDAY TEST 1
[MONDAY TEST 1]

**When I do not know what to pray, do I stop praying, or do I stay before God in my weakness?**

Teacher:

"Some prayers do not need better vocabulary.

They need surrender."

---

## CARD 7 - READ
### Romans 8:28-30 - ESV

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

---

## CARD 8 - TEACH 2
### Let verse 29 define the word "good"

Teacher:

"Romans 8:28 may be one of the most loved verses in the Bible.

It may also be one of the easiest to make say something Paul did not say.

Paul did not write:

Everything that happens is good.

He did not write:

Everything will become comfortable.

He did not write:

If you love God, the thing you lost will always be replaced with something you like better."

[MAIN POINT]

**All things working for good does not mean all things are good.**

"Paul will not even let us define 'good' for ourselves.

Read the next verse.

Verse 29 says where God's purpose is taking us: conformed to the image of His Son."

[MAIN POINT]

**Verse 29 gets to define good before we do: becoming more like Christ.**

Teacher optional scholarship, cut first:
The wording of verse 28 has a textual and grammatical question. Some manuscripts include "God" explicitly and English translations differ in how they handle the subject. The technical question does not overturn the paragraph. God's purpose remains the controlling idea.

Teacher:

"So maybe the better question in a hard season is not only, 'How do I get out of this?'

Maybe another honest question is, 'What would looking more like Jesus inside this look like?'"

---

## CARD 9 - POLL
[POLL]

**When life suddenly changes, what do you usually do first?**

A. Try to figure out why it happened.
B. Start making a new plan.
C. Call or text somebody I trust.
D. Give it a little time before I decide what it means.

Teacher cue:
Anonymous. One tap. Reveal, name the spread neutrally, move on. Do not preach at the tallest bar.

If the poll system is unavailable, skip the poll rather than replacing anonymity with a public show of hands.

---

## CARD 10 - MONDAY TEST 2
[MONDAY TEST 2]

**Before I call something "good," am I using comfort as the definition, or Christlikeness?**

Pause.

[STICKY LINE]

**Comfort is not Paul's definition of good. Christlikeness is.**

---

## CARD 11 - READ
### Romans 8:31-35 - ESV

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?

## CARD 12 - TEACH 3
### Your circumstance does not get the final word

Teacher:

"Listen to Paul's questions.

'If God is for us, who can be against us?'

'Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect?'

'Who is to condemn?'

'Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?'

Paul is not pretending nobody will oppose you.

Verse 35 is full of things nobody wants: tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, sword.

The promise is not that none of those things happen.

The promise is that none of those things get to overturn what God has already done in Christ."

[MAIN POINT]

**A hard circumstance is not a verdict on God's love.**

Pause.

"Verse 33 sounds like a courtroom. The commentary points out that the underlying language is legal language for bringing a charge against someone.

Then Paul asks, "Who is to condemn?"

And the answer turns immediately to Jesus: died, raised, at God's right hand, interceding."

[MAIN POINT]

**The circumstance may be loud. It does not get to be the judge.**

"So what does that change on Monday morning?"

---

## CARD 13 - DISCUSSION
[DISCUSSION]

**Which is harder for you: not knowing why something happened, or not knowing what to do next?**

Teacher cue:
Take two or three responses. Nobody has to disclose a painful circumstance. Keep the discussion at the level each person chooses.

Then ask:

"What changes if you know God's character before you know the explanation?"

---

## CARD 14 - MONDAY TEST 3
[MONDAY TEST 3]

**Am I letting this circumstance tell me what God is like, or letting God tell me how to read this circumstance?**

Pause.

[STICKY LINE]

**Read your circumstances through God's character, not God's character through your circumstances.**

---

## CARD 15 - TEACH 4 / CORRECT LENS
### Two intercessors in one paragraph

Teacher:

"Here is the thing I do not want you to miss.

Look back at verse 26.

The Spirit intercedes for us.

Now look at verse 34.

Christ intercedes for us.

Same paragraph.

At one end, you do not know what to pray.

At the other end, accusations and suffering are shouting.

And Paul shows you help on both ends."

[MAIN POINT]

**The Spirit intercedes. Christ intercedes. You are not carrying this alone.**

Teacher:

"That is why we can use the Correct Lens."

### THE CORRECT LENS
1. Name the circumstance.
2. Name what you are tempted to conclude about God.
3. Name what Romans 8 says is already true.

"Do not deny the circumstance.

Do not romanticize it.

Just do not hand it authority God never gave it."

---

## CARD 16 - QUIET
[QUIET PROMPT]

**What circumstance have I been using to tell me who God is?**

Teacher cue:
Sit down. Stop talking. Deliberately press **START 30-SECOND QUIET**. Let the countdown do the work.

Do not rescue the silence.

---

## CARD 17 - OBEY
### Run one circumstance through the Correct Lens this week.

Teacher:

"Run one circumstance through the Correct Lens this week.

Write what it makes you fear or assume.

Then beside it, write what Romans 8 says is already true.

Do not ask the circumstance to interpret God.

Let what God has said interpret the circumstance.

Then pray from what is true."

No second assignment.

---

## CARD 18 - PRAY
[PRAYER]

"Father, some of us know exactly what we want You to do.

Some of us do not even know what to ask.

Thank You that weakness does not push us outside Your care.

Thank You for Your Spirit who helps us and intercedes for us.

Thank You for Christ who died, was raised, is at Your right hand, and intercedes for us.

Teach us not to make every circumstance a private message.

Teach us not to waste the circumstances You can use.

Make us more like Jesus in them.

And when life is loud, help us remember what You have already said is true.

Amen."

---

## CARD 19 - CLOSE
### Learn. Love. Live.

**LEARN:** We saw that weakness does not end prayer, "good" is defined by Christlikeness, and painful circumstances do not overturn what God has done in Christ.

**LOVE:** We saw the Spirit interceding for us and Christ interceding for us. God is not standing at a distance while we struggle.

**LIVE:** Run one circumstance through the Correct Lens this week.

Final line:

[STICKY LINE]

**Circumstances are not a code to crack. They are a place where God is already at work.**

# 7. VISUAL PLAN

1. **COVER:** warm ordinary-life scene, car windshield / changing sky / family road, no "sign from God" symbolism.
2. **OPEN CONTINUITY:** no archaeological artifact required. Use typography or a restrained real-location/map treatment only if it helps the Corinth-to-Rome continuity. Do not force a history image.

- Does "good" stay tied to v.29 rather than comfort?
- Do we avoid saying every circumstance is a message from God?
- Do we distinguish God's use of circumstances from reading circumstances as revelation?
- Is Erastus absent from the core unless Bobby explicitly restores it for a clear teaching reason?

- Is the last-week callback explicit enough to distinguish revelation from intercession without reteaching September 20?
- Are the Spirit's intercession and Christ's intercession both visible?
- Is there exactly one concrete act of obedience?
- Does Learn. Love. Live. retrace what actually happened?
- Do all three Monday Tests turn the text onto the listener?
- Is QUIET protected and timed?
